Newspaper Analysis
Masthead - Title of the newspaper displayed on the front page
Main Image - Dominant picture, often filling much of the front cover
Caption - Brief text underneath an image describing the photograph or graphic.
Headline - A phrase that summaries the main point of the article, usually in large print.
Plug - Displaying promotions, special offers
Cross-Head - Subheading that appear in the text of the article
Splash - the main story
Standalone - Picture story that can exist on its own or on a front page leading to a story inside
Byline - Where the name of the reporter is included at the beginning of the article
Stand First - Block of text that introduces the story, normally in a different style.
Denotation - the straightforward meaning of a sign, literally what you see.
Connotation - the extra linked meaning behind the denotation, less straight forward.
